Social Media Women of Color

16 March 2009 9 Comments

tech perspectiveThe premiere site focused on the Women in the social web that don’t always make it to the top ten lists of the high profile sites. Many say they just can’t find these women. They complain that when they are creating their lists they don’t know where to find women of color in the social web. This site will highlight, profile, provide interviews and select top ten categories of these extraordinary women.

Alltop has begun to categorize bloggers by topics, racial backgrounds and issue areas. You will not find catalogs here but detailed descriptions, profiles and interviews of very diverse women in this space.

Social networks will be expanded through twitter, qik vids, audio posts, interviewing women of color on the street at conferences. We will suggest women for panel slots and comment on any posts on the most influential, shorty awards, or twinfluencers on the web.

The SMWOC will describe the criteria of the selection process. It will not be based solely on the number of followers, readers or any click through data. Our criteria will include how active they are in their area of expertise. The real value in the social web is if your are actually expanding, interacting, connecting people in the social media space. How many friends you have will not get anyone on the list. An example of what the criteria will NOT be based on apps or ideas like WeFollow which is based solely on the number of followers.

hello digital sista,. My friend Tracy Strain (Lorraine Hansbury Project) told me you were starting this site. I had wanted to talk to you after you announced the J-Lab competition– If you applied, I hope they give you money!

Whenever I saw you at WAM, it seemed you were working to deadline!
Anyway, I just wanted to congratulate you for getting the site up and running, I am sure it will go well.

    regards,

Great idea, digitalsista … I really like the emphasis on detailed descriptions and getting beyond the simplistic “number of followers/page view” ranking approaches. It’ll be exciting to watch the site evolve!
